Designed as a submission to the entry competition for the Canadian Pavilion at the 2012 Biennale di Venezia, the International Exhibition of Architecture, in Venice, Italy, this speculative project -entitled 'Submerged' recounts the capsizing of a boat on Lake Superior and the sublime interaction of the body with the natural landscape.
Like the finger rocks across a river delta, the dwelling remains mostly sub-surface. Conceived while kayaking the voyageur channels of the French River, the dwelling is sited within a deep crevasse engaging the harsh and distinct seasons. The design uses sun, wind, orientation, precipitation and geology to its benefit. Wind, water, snow, sun and rock: these elements are naturally exploited through convection, heat gain, and water collection.
